Size Doesn’t Matter.
My daughter bought a Chihuahua, and one day she asked me to look after him. At the time he was a tiny puppy who could sit in the palm of my hand. I love dogs and if I had chosen one it would not have been a Chihuahua. Anyway, I thought he might like a walk so I put him on a lead and left the house. I find it difficult to describe how I felt, but it definitely wasn’t comfortable. I think of myself as a man and, well, a Chihuahua doesn’t seem like a man’s dog. Anyway I took this tiny little animal out and felt like I was the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons.
BUT, I learned an exceptionally valuable lesson the first time I took him to the local park. He’s an absolute babe magnet (regardless of age). I’d never been approached by so many women in my entire life. I even thought it might be an idea to rent him out on a daily basis but that was quickly scotched by my daughter. I thought about the Power this tiny little animal has to attract people to him and realised a valuable lesson.
Power comes from within; it comes because of something you deeply relate to and are passionate about. If you’re not happy; change what you do.
The dog, whose name, by the way, is Teddy, just has the power to connect with people in a way that makes them happy, and of course he is too. And here’s the essential point about this, ask yourself what makes you happy?
What makes you happy?
The most fulfilled people are those who do what they love! They pursue a dream and do so unremittingly. They are clear about what they want and have a plan to achieve it.
If you are going to work to pay the bills, you’re doing the wrong job. If you’re going to work because it is giving you skills and paying you to advance towards your ultimate goal, then you’re doing it on your terms not those of your employer.
School is not an Education!
School teaches you stuff. How to read, write, add up that sort of thing, all of which are essential for a successful life, but school doesn’t teach you the game of life, it simply teaches you to function in society, to rules set by governments keen on control.
The root of the word education, is the Latin word educo, meaning to “lead out”. School doesn’t lead you out, it just fills you with stuff. Please don’t misunderstand this, a modern education must give you all that stuff; surviving in this world without it is extremely difficult. It also helps to identify what aptitudes you have and perhaps from this what you might like to do. However, school doesn’t teach you to connect with your dreams and help you to design ways to achieve fulfilment. If anything the expression of a dream in a school environment leads to ridicule and judgement, not enthusiasm and encouragement.
I’m not saying school is bad, I just think it is mis-focussed. The world would be a happier place if people were encouraged to connect with what makes them happy, and taught to focus on how that can be turned into an income and a career.
Learn to dream again.
Over the years I have helped thousands of people to make real changes in their lives, sometimes revolutionary ones. But here is the problem for most of us, we don’t actually know what we want.
I’ve witnessed huge changes in people as they have grown in their knowledge and confidence, and I have also coached many who express a desire to learn and make changes but end up exactly where they started. They have the same knowledge, but they simply fail to act.
Taking action is a problem because unless it is connected with an emotional reason for the action it simply won’t happen. Teddy doesn’t have an image of himself as a small dog, he probably has no image at all, but how he interacts with his world brings joy to those he meets and to himself.
What brings you joy? It doesn’t matter what it is except to you, and what others think is their problem not yours, don’t give them houseroom because this is your life and joy is a birth right, rather than a gift from someone else.
You will never outperform your own self image!
Teddy’s is one of love and joy, it brings him the same and when I have him I meet marvellous, interesting and nice people.
We’re all where we are because of the choices we have made, many of them from experiences in childhood. The image we have of our selves keeps the truth we have created aligned with our values. Change comes from within by recreating our self image enabling us to be more than we are and to create more joy in life.
